Popular Oahu Beaches
The island of Oahu has over 112 miles of white sandy shoreline, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, and a variety of beaches for every type of beach goer. Water temperatures range from 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit year round, making the swimming on Oahu beaches extremely pleasant. Whether your idea of the perfect day at the beach is lounging around soaking up the sun's rays or catching a giant wave on your surfboard, there's a beach in Oahu just waiting for you.
Here's some of the more popular Oahu beaches:
The North Shore
Over 7 miles of sand stretches across the area of Oahu known as the North Shore. Multiple beaches inhabit the North Shore, including Waimeia Bay, Pipeline, and Sunset Beach. Waimeia Bay is a tranquil beach in the summer months, with little to no wave action. Come to the same beach in the winter and the waves can reach 30 feet high! The Pipeline is home to year-round surfing waves for advanced surfers, with mid-November being the ideal time to visit for the Triple Crown of Surfing. Sunset Beach is named for it's amazing sunsets, and a colorful sky upon the sun setting behind the waves that you just won't see anywhere else.
Malaekahana State Park and Goat Island
This beach stretches more than a mile long and is never busy during the week. The beach gently slopes toward the shoreline, and has small waves suitable for novice swimmers. When the water at Malaekahana State Park is particularly calm, you can wade through the water and access the nearby Goat Island.
Lanikai Beach
If you're looking for gorgeous scenery, Lanikai Beach offers half a mile of white sandy beach, palm trees and tropical plants. The beach is known for it's outstanding sunrises, so try to get there before the sun makes it's first appearance of the day and be ready with your camera! A nearby coral reef helps keep the water quite calm for novice swimming and children. The water is a deep turquoise color. The proximity of Lanikai Beach to the islands of Mokumanu and Mokulua bird sanctuaries means you can easily kayak from Lanikai to either of the beaches.
Waikiki Beach
A busy and popular beach of Oahu, Waikiki Beach features a yacht harbor with boats of every size, type and color line the water, and the nearby Hawaiian canoe clubs train. For people who enjoy the typical resort vacation, the Hilton Hawaiian Village is located on Waikiki Beach and features hula shows on weekends and firework shows that can be seen from miles around. The other end of Waikiki is less populated and visited, with 200 acres of parkland and plenty of shady, quiet areas to enjoy. It is this end of Waikiki Beach where the locals tend to visit for a scenic jog through the park, or a swim at Sans Souci Beach. In between the two extremes of the island are seven-tenths of a square mile of hotels, restaurants, stores and theaters.
