Slats should be thick for comfort but it is certainly not a requirement. To me, the thicker slats are my preference. The thin slats are comfortable too, it is just I prefer the thicker for my own use.

There are gliders that are a little more plush with cushions. These are typically made out of metal. Even though the wooden gliders do not have cushions, there is no reason why you cannot add one.
