Portland Oregon Events And Festivals For The Holidays
When the weather changes from to warm to cool and the leaves in the parks and malls
all around Portland leave the trees bare, one would think that most of Portland would head indoors. Not so, there are tons of Portland holiday events held outside all during November and December. However, if you must be indoors, this is a city that offers you lots of activities to choose from.
November and December Events
Every Monday there are special activities at space managed by Portland Mall Management Inc. These are free events that range from concerts to face painting.
The 77th Annual Overbore Sausage & Sauerkraut Dinner will be held November 5, 2011 for lovers of this traditional Dutch,dinner staple. Held each year by Visitation Church to benefit their school, the food is great and the beautiful grounds include 120 year old Sequoia trees. Perfect for walking off all that food. Local artisans will be displaying their works at this event as well. The 500 or so residents of Overbore attract over 10,000 visitors each year.
The Northwest Food and Wine Festival will be held on November 5th from 4 Pm to 8 PM. Over 600 wineries and gourmet participate in this annual event sponsored by the Pacific Winery Association. It will be held at the the Double Tree by Hilton Lloyd Center, the address is 1000 NE Multnomah Street in Portland. This a must visit for wine connoisseurs!
The 2011 Christmas Grotto Festival of Lights is more than a lit Christmas tree. It is a magnificent choral experience held each year from Friday, November 25 through Friday, December 30 at The Grotto, NE 85th and Sandy Boulevard, Portland. This event is open from 5 PM to 9:30 PM. The Grotto presents the largest Christmas choral festival in the world. The 2011 theme of this special event is Peace To The World. Each night there will five shows in the 600 seat auditorium. Food and beverages are offered by vendors and shoppers can buy gifts or other items in the Christian Gift shop at the Grotto.
Tree Lighting Celebration will take place on November 25th at Pioneer Square in downtown Portland. The ceremony begins at 5:30PM. Get there early as locals and tourists alike flock to this celebration.
The Macy Holiday Parade will take place in downtown Portland the day after Thanksgiving. That is Friday, November 25th. It starts at 9 AM. The route begins at NW Park and Davis, then the parade travels east to Broadway, south on Broadway to SW Alder, east on Alder, past the Macy Department Store to 4th, north on 4th to NW Flanders, west on Flanders to Park
The Portland Zoo is all lit up for Christmas from early November to January 1st. As an added treat, the Zoo sponsors The Thanksgiving Day Beast Feast which provides treats for the animals that they take from paper mache turkeys. Great photo ops abound! The Beast Feast runs from Thursday, November 24 through Sunday, November 27, the hours are 11:30 a.m. till 2:30 p.m. The Zoo Lights display is open for viewing Nov 27 through January 3.
Every year, for the past 16 years, Portland celebrates its micro-brew fame with an Annual Ale Festival . This year it will be held at Portland Courthouse Square from November 30th through December 4th . Over 30 breweries will be featured at this event, now in its 16th year. Tickets can be purchased at the event of in advance. Featured beverages include Belgian, Barleywine, Porters and Stouts that are brewed especially to warm your insides. Sorry, but this activity is not suited for anyone under 21 years of age.
The Annual Christmas Ship Parade runs from December 8 through 20, 2011 . As many as 60 boats from the Willamette and Columbia rivers are lit up for the holidays and glide by the Portland waterfront. As the schedule varies each evening click for the viewing schedule.
Portland is wonderful in any season, but the holiday season is a great time to visit, with events galore for adults and families.
