Postpartum Adjusting
Most couples spend many hours preparing for and anticipating their child's birth. They take birthing classes, read books on childbirth, work on the perfect birth plan, and probably hire a labor coach. In many cases, very little effort goes into preparing for the weeks after delivery, and couples may find themselves unprepared for the reality of living with a new baby. Many women imagine peaceful days gazing at their beautiful child. Whereas the joy and fulfillment that comes with having a new baby is undeniable, most women find themselves overwhelmed.
Physical changes, sleep deprivation, hormonal shifts and a total change in daily routine can cause the first post-partum weeks seem less pleasurable than anticipated. While some of the anxiety and exhaustion that occurs in the first weeks is inevitable, there are ways of easing the transition.
Sleep whenever possible
Sleep earlier than usual and take naps when the baby is sleeping. If exhaustion becomes overwhelming, you could pump your breast milk and let someone else feed the baby. If you bottle feed, get a bottle warmer which will allow you to have some formula at the bedside, thus avoiding unnecessary trips to the kitchen at night.
Minimize nighttime disruptions
Encourage the baby to go back to sleep at night, rather than having play time. Keep a night light on and avoid turning on overhead lighting when attending the baby. Feed the baby quietly, keep voices low and change the diaper only when absolutely necessary.
Reduce domestic demands
This may include having family members or friends help with house cleaning, food preparation and entertaining.
Continue adequate fluid intake and good nutrition
Since body requires more calories to create milk, it is important to continue to drink well and eat well. If you are not a big consumer of dairy products, you could take daily calcium supplements. Breastfeeding can be a very exhausting exercise.
Get adequate fresh air and physical activity
Going outdoors for short durations can be very refreshing. Use a baby carrier, stroller or sing to take a walk with the baby. There are post-partum yoga and exercise classes that allow moms to bring along infants with them.
Join a mom's group
Allow yourself to voice the frustrations and difficulties of having a new baby in front of a group of women in the same situation. Hearing similar feelings from other mothers can be reassuring.
Be gentle with yourself
Take some time to meditate, indulge in massage or listen to good music. By meeting your own needs, you will be in a better position to enjoy this special period of your life.
