Most often, parents just want to get done with the entire exercise of potty training toddlers, but the fact is, it makes them all the more uncooperative and rigid to their current pattern. The thing is, there's a difference between encouraging your child and pushing him beyond limits. The former helps speed up the process, and the latter delays it indefinitely. Think of it as this, you, as a parent, also need to follow some instructions in order to get the job done, so to speak. The more you struggle with your child, the more unrelenting he will become. And trust me, he can really make things difficult for you!

The right approach to follow while potty training toddlers is to move ahead with them, not ahead of them. This way, they will also feel a sense of responsibility, and would WANT to put in the extra effort to get things done the way they are supposed to be done. Many expert psychologists have revealed that children between the ages of 1-4 undergo a sea change in their moods, so to speak. This means that one second, they might want to grow up and do things all by themselves, and the next moment, they would expect spoon-feeding from you. As a parent, this is your duty to keep up with these changes, and respond accordingly. I am not saying that you have to yield in to all their demands, but yes, there are going to be times when acting tough can have serious repercussions.
