In medieval times, diamonds were thought to be able to determine a persons guilt or innocence because they would change to a darker colour if the accused was guilty and would become brighter if they were innocent. Unlikely as this sounds, I am sure that this method of divining guilt would be most useful to the more disreputable amongst the noble classes.

Even with the thought of magical and supernatural powers, the diamond remains a source of all kinds of romantic notions but, nowadays, its role as a magical crystal is purely metaphorical. The magic extends only to the declaration of love and lifelong commitment to one another.

Regrettably, the romance will not last as long as the diamond, because the human life span is so short compared to that of a diamond. However, as an heirloom, it can be passed down from generation to generation and all the time it will increase in value.
