, business cards made their debut long before business card holders. These cards made their way to France and England long about the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They were referred to as "visiting" cards and were used as personal rather than business items and were used at a later date as those.

There were specific manners involved in using the visiting cards. They were used as announcements of a visit by a visitor to the house. On each entry table in a home, a small silver tray was placed that these people could drop their card into.

The first actual business cards were printed with a baseball players picture. The other side showed contact information of the carrier. These became quite popular and are known as collector cards now.

As they were used more, their popularity demanded something to carry them in besides a pocket or, in the case of a lady, a purse. Even a tray on the table needed some additional attention. That is when holders were designed and developed. The selection has become quite extensive. If one can think of it, it can be created. They can be whimsical, traditional, or all-business and no fooling around. They also can be found in a variety of portable forms as well as desk, counter and wall models.

Similar to the shape of a cigarette case, the holder can have a flip-up top and can be carried in briefcase, purse or pocket. Also as a lighter opens, so can some holders. Personal holders carried on the person may not be as decorative as those that are stationary. Holders can have a moderate price or be extravagant to lavish, according to the form they are in. Personalization and embossing can be seen on gold, silver, leather and plastic holders.

Many businesses utilize profession-specific designs made from a variety of materials. These would be featured in point-of-purchase areas such as waiting rooms, real estate offices, store counters trade shows and so forth. Doctors or dentists could show the holders as dentures or stethoscopes, or other items used in their daily practice, denoting their professions. Lawyers could pattern theirs as law books, for example. Architects might prefer a tool of their choosing that represents what they do daily, and maybe a men's garment store could have a men's suit holding cards. Shapes of animals, heavy equipment, trees, boats, cars... All could depict a certain specialty.

Holders handcrafted for certain trades are also stylish. These could conceivably be made of components used in the running of the business daily. A cute idea would be to fashion a treasure box to be used in an antique shop to carry cards. Or create a small guillotine to hold cards in a costume shop.

In vogue are also the wall-mounted type of Business Card Holders. These are usually seen as multiple-card holders. Also stylish and trendy are most often seen in the binder and Rollo Dex type of holders.
