Practicing Hinduism In An Islamic State

Because of the need for employment, many Hindi Indians took on jobs in Gulf Coast

Countries such as Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Yemen, Qatar and Oman. While some countries have a moderate view on other people practicing their religion in their country, some are intolerant and are strict in following the letter of the Koran.

In some other countries, there are Hindi temples built where Indians are allowed to worship their faith out in the open. These countries include Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Yemen and Oman.

In other gulf coast countries, there is a strict adherence to the word of the Koran. There is a passage that specifically prohibits Islamic countries from allowing the practice of the faith of others not mentioned in the Islamic Holy Book. Only religions such as Christianity are allowed to be practiced in conservative countries such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen and Iran.

This conservatism though has only become pervasive in recent decades. Historical records have shown the interaction between Arab sailors and Indian merchants. During the 8th century, Islam was introduced into India through the conquest of Kerala. As a result, many Indians were brought to become slaves in other Arab controlled lands. While there was recognition of Hinduism during the conquest of Kerala, the imposition of Islam was well received in India.

Nowadays though, because of the need for skilled manpower, much of the workforce of the economies of many Gulf States is comprised of Indian workers. Their profile includes middle management positions in finance, information technology and administrative enterprises. Other positions include skilled workers in the supervisory to the entry-level positions. A greater majority though work in domestic service positions such as a maids, nannies and other similar jobs.

As the numbers of Indians increase in strictly Muslim countries, their culture and religion have become increasingly tolerated. Some Indians have also set up shop, putting up schools, restaurants and other services for the Indian workers in the country. The Indian government has also become increasingly active in protecting Indian workers in their respective Gulf Coast countries, providing assistance and repatriation services to those deemed to have qualified for such services.

Thus, practice of Hinduism in Arab countries depends on the conservative nature of the country. Depending on the rulership, if they are tolerant of other religions, Islam has been able to coincide with Hindi worship in their lands. It must be clear though that such worship is tolerated before doing so in public.
