Ex 1: 8(a-2)+4b-8(a-b-8)+10
Solution: 8(a-2)+4b-8(a-b-8)+10
= 8a16+4b8a+8b+64+10
= 8a8a+4b+8b-16+64+10
= 12b+58
Ex 2: 5x - 15 = 3x - 20
Solution: 5x - 15 = 3x 20
5x 15 + 15 =3x -20 + 15 (Add 15 on both sides)
5x =3x 5
5x 3x =3x -3x - 5 (Add -3x on both sides)
2x = -5
'(2x)/2 =( -5)/2' (Divided both sides by 2)
X='(-5)/2'
Ex 3: Solve the equation 8x + 16 = -100
Solution: 8x + 16 = -100
8x + 16 - 16 = -100 - 16(Add -16 on both sides)
8x = -116
'(8x)/8 = (-116)/8' (Divided both sides by 8)
x = - 14.5
Example to Solve Word Problem in Algebra
Solve word problem in algebra:
In three more years, the Mike grandfather will be six times as old as Mike was last year. When mike present age is to be adding to his grandfather present age, the total is 65. How old is each one now?
Both their ages last year and their ages will be in three years label
Mike present age "m" and his
Grandfathers present age "g".
Then m + g = 65.
Mike age last year was m 1.
His grandfather's age in three more years will be g + 3.
g + 3 = 6(m 1)
Therefore
m+g=65
g + 3 = 6(m 1)
Solving the first equation m = 65 g.
g+3=6m6
g+3=6(65g)6
g+3=3906g6
g+3=3846g
g+6g=3843
7g=381
g = 54
The grandfather is 57 years old. Since m + g = 54, then m = 11, and
Mike is presently eleven years old.
Problem: Jeanne has $17 in her piggy bank. How much money does she need to buy a game that costs $68? [IMAGE]
Solution: Let x represent the amount of money Jeanne needs. Then the following equation can represent this problem:
17 + x = 68
We can subtract 17 from both sides of the equation to find the value of x.
68 - 17 = x
Answer: x = 51, so Jeanne needs $51 to buy the game.
In the problem above, x is a variable. The symbols 17 + x = 68 form an algebraic equation. Let's look at some examples of writing algebraic equations.
Example 1: Write each sentence as an algebraic equation.
