Pregnancy Nausea - Weeks Of It

Morning sickness, also known as pregnancy nausea and vomiting is something most women will experience

. Even if you haven't experienced it yet, you probably know what comes along with your pregnancy. Nausea. Weeks and weeks of glorious nausea. Oh yeah, and vomiting.

It can start at any point in your pregnancy, but for most women it starts around four to six weeks in. The symptoms can be a mild as being a little nauseated in the morning for a few weeks, to extreme vomiting that won't let up and continues until your baby is born.

There are treatments that can offer relief, such as medication, acupuncture, acupressure, herbs, and exercise.

One of the biggest mysteries is what causes morning sickness. There are numerous theories, like surging hormones, expecting multiple births, it's a girl, not vomiting enough when she took birth control (remember, these are theories), but the one we'll explore in this article is that morning sickness is a form of protection for you and your unborn child.

If you've experienced (or are experiencing) morning sickness before, you know that certain scents and foods make you run for the nearest toilet or garbage can. One theory has to do with chemical toxins in plants. It is known that plants contain these toxins for their own protection against predatory animals.

Adult livers and other organs have the ability to detoxify these plant toxins, so they are relatively harmless in our bodies. Unfortunately, the human fetus does not have the ability to detoxify these plant toxins because their organs, like the liver, haven't fully developed yet.

Even the littlest bit of the plant toxins could be lethal to an unborn child. In theory, mothers become nauseated when they smell or taste the food because their bodies sense these plant toxins; it's a defense mechanism that protects the fetus from these poisons.

Another theory is that the vomiting and nausea associated with morning sickness is a form of protection for the mother. When a woman becomes pregnant, her immune system goes on a partial vacation; it doesn't entirely shut down, but it isn't fully functional. This is thought to happen so the mother's body doesn't reject the fetus tissue growing inside of her.

With the immune system defenses lowered, consuming animal products could be dangerous. The bacteria and parasites that the immune system would normally fight now have a way into the body. The theory is that morning sickness protects the mother from these potentially harmful bacteria that her body can't fight as well as it normally would.

Whether it is plant toxins or bacteria from animal products, if the smell or taste of certain foods nauseates you, avoid them. Once the morning sickness subsides (around fourteen weeks into your pregnancy), you won't have the reactions you are having now (or will have.) Take in whatever food your body will allow and remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
