Preperation Steps Required For Lawn Turf Laying

Once you've made the decision to lay a new turf lawn

, there are several things to consider and prepare for. Clearly the type of turf and the quantity is important, and so is ensuring that the area in which the turf is to be laid is well prepared.

Firstly, the decisions you make about which type of turf you purchase will depend mostly on the use you foresee the lawn turf getting. If, for example, you want a family turf lawn on which the children can play, then an ornamental turf will not be the best choice. Turf can be chosen and purchased that is both attractive, but has hard-wearing qualities that will enable it to survive the heaviest footfall and the physical demands made of it by children's outdoor games.

The next thing to do is to make sure that the area which needs to be laid with turf is measured correctly to so that the relevant amount of turf is ordered. This can be done relatively simply because most turf suppliers will sell their turf by the meter square (m). To work out how many rolls of turf are required, simply take a width and length measurement and multiply the two - the figure your left with is the basic number of rolls required. Ordering an additional 5% of turf is always recommended because of waste when the turf is trimmed.

So now that you've ordered your turf, what should you do next? Don't spend time waiting for the turf to arrive - this is really important. Turf is a fragile living organism, and on the day that it arrives at your house, you need to ensure that the ground and topsoil is prepared and ready to receive the turf immediately, otherwise, you may find that you'll need to store the turf, and storing turf increases the risk of it drying out, dying and being completely wasted.

Remove any old lawn by first applying a grass weed killer (which can take several days), and then using a turf cutter remove the lawn. This should leave a good even surface which may need topping up with suitable topsoil. Once the topsoil is in place, it will need moistening before the turf can be laid.
