Prevent Breakdowns By Checking Your Engine Oil
Everyone knows that you should keep an eye on your engine oil to make sure your car stays in good working order
, but how many people actually do it? The consequences of not checking your oil can be both disastrous and expensive, so its well worth doing on a regular basis.
Most mechanics advise you to get your cars engine oil changed at least every 3,000 miles, which generally works out at around four times a year. This may seem like an excessive amount but the alternative is to break down by the side of the road, and if you dont have breakdown cover it could be even worse.
Of course, if you rely heavily on your car and you have a high mileage rate you will need to change your oil more regularly, so it is important that you keep this in mind. If you find it hard to remember, write it on your calendar or set up a reminder on your phone, that way you wont forget.
You should be checking the levels of your oil once a week to keep your car running smoothly and you can do this without the help of a mechanic. To do this, turn your engine off and leave it for at least five minutes so that it can cool down.
Once it is cool, lift your bonnet and find your dipstick, which should be in a brightly coloured tube. If it has engine oil on it from previous use wipe it clean with a cloth and find the oil level marks on the dipstick. To find out the exact level of your engine oil, slowly push it back into its tube and then pull it out again. The oil in the tank will adhere to the dipstick and you will be able to see where on the level marks it goes up to. If your engine oil is between the high and low marks it is perfect, but if it is closer to the low mark you will need to top it up.
If you dont feel confident enough to do this you can always get your mechanic to help, and they will be able to top up your tank with the correct engine oil. You can buy engine oil from many local providers, as well as online, but you should always make sure that you are buying the right one. Putting the wrong type of engine oil into your car will result in expensive engine damage, so look online now to find out which one to use in your vehicle.
