Preventative Care - Protecting Your Smile For The Future
Your Mill Creek dentist encourages all patients to visit their office at least two times per year for proper cleaning and checkups
. Dental health plays a major role in our systemic health and we want to be sure everyone gets the best and most up-to-date treatment possible. Penny Creek Family and Cosmetic Dentistry has three hygienists to provide a wide variety of hours in order to accommodate their patients' busy schedules. With evening and weekend appointments, proper preventative care can be successfully, and easily achieved. While you are responsible for day-to-day dental maintenance, dental hygienists, along with general, cosmetic and family dentists, play an integral role in preventative oral care.
Let's Start with the Basics
Brushing your teeth is fundamentally important. However, it alone will not remove the calculus (plaque) that builds up over time. Plaque must be removed to lower your risk of toothaches, cavities, periodontal disease or even the loss of all of your teeth. By removing plaque, you can reduce your chances of needing root canals, tooth extractions, dental bridges, crowns and more.
The most important prevention technique is brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day to remove dental plaque. Your dentist in Mill Creek recommends that you brush your teeth at least twice a day because the foods that we eat contain sugars and starches. Tooth brushing cleans and whitens your teeth, while helping prevent the onset of tooth decay and gum disease, one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults.
The following steps detail optimal brushing habits:
*Use a small amount of American Dental Association (ADA) approved toothpaste
*Hold at a 45-degree angle
*Use gentle and short stokes
*Use the same motions and brush the outside areas of your upper and lower incisors
*Using back and forth motions, brush the biting surfaces of your upper and lower molars
*Brush the insides of your upper and lower molars with the same back and forth brushing motion
*With the tip of your brush, brush the inside areas of your upper and lower incisors
*Lastly, brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh
In addition to brushing your teeth at least twice a day, it is also important to floss your teeth at least once a day. Flossing in between your teeth is an essential oral hygiene practice for avoiding gum disease and preventing tooth decay. Many people don't realize the importance of flossing and often forego the hygienic practice, believing that tooth brushing is adequate enough for the removal of plaque.
Flossing your teeth is not hard, does not take much time and should be performed at least once daily. The following steps detail optimal flossing techniques for maximum effectiveness:
*Select the type of floss you prefer
*Tear off a piece of floss about 18 inches long
*Wrap one end of the floss around either your middle or index finger
*Wrap the other end of floss around the finger on your opposite hand
*Grip the floss tightly between your thumb and finger
*Gently insert the dental floss between your teeth, moving it back and forth against the tooth
*Repeat this process for all upper and lower teeth
Maintain Regular Dental Visits
Since most dental conditions are painless at first, if you don't regularly visit your dentist you may not be aware of dental problems until they cause you pain and significant damage. For the best results, it is important to schedule regular dental checkups and cleanings every six months with your dentist in Mill Creek. If you have a higher risk for oral diseases, you may need to visit your dentist more frequently.
At each visit, your dentist should also perform oral cancer screenings to check for signs of abnormal tissues. Talk to your dentist in Mill Creek today for more information on how you can help protect your smile and maintain proper oral health care. By making an appointment for a checkup and cleaning you are taking the next step to a healthy, glowing smile.
