Having a motorbike is an exciting and liberating experience but it can also be dangerous

There are some steps that you can take to ensure that you are as safe as possible when riding your motorbike.

The biggest reasons for accidents involving motorbikes are that the driver fails to look properly, they misjudge another person's speed, lose control of their vehicle, are in a hurry and are careless, and do not safely perform a turn or overtake correctly. These mistakes can cause damages, injury and loss of life for a driver and only take a second to happen. Even if you have motorbike insurance to cover these incidents it is better to be a proactive motorbike driver so that the events are less likely to happen in the first place.

Be prepared and try to think ahead. You need to be alert and expect things to happen quickly and without notice. You don't know what the drivers around you are thinking or going to do. You may be doing everything right but if the driver beside you doesn't see you in their blind spot you can be in trouble in a matter of seconds. Be ready to respond and watch everyone around you so that you can catch the signs that they are about to do something that can encroach on your safety.

Prepare yourself and your bike properly for the weather. Make sure that your equipment is clean, gives you proper visibility and the best safety possible in every kind of weather. You do not want to be caught off guard by the weather and end up being hurt because you were not prepared. Having a clean, well maintained bike, tyres and equipment can be the difference between arriving home safely after a great, relaxing ride and having a horrible accident.

If you are in an accident, don't take your helmet off until examined by a health care professional in case of injury, Make sure that someone has called an expert and emergency services so that they can assess injuries and damages. If it is obvious that no one is injured and it has been a very minor incident make sure that you exchange your motorbike insurance details and contact information with the other parties involved. Do this even if you do not think there are any damages or injuries because you may find later that something is wrong that was not initially noticed.

It is also a good idea to get the names of anyone who witnessed the incident in case there is a problem or discrepancy about the incident in the future. If there are damages contact your motorbike insurance company or broker for instructions on what you need to do and to inform them of the situation. They should be able to answer any specific questions you have about your policy.
