Printers – are Lasers still better than Inkjets?
Printers are Lasers still better than Inkjets
?
When it came to buying a printer traditionally large business went for the laser printer and the small user chose an inkjet printer. This purchase decision was based on the fact that laser printers were large expensive pieces of equipment that were more accessible to big business. In addition, ink jet printers were deemed to produce poorer print quality and had limitations when it came to high level usage. Much has changed with modern technology but there are still major differences to consider.
These printers use totally different technology. Inkjet printers essentially spray ink onto your page as a result of electrical impulses onto the cartridges. The ink then bleeds into the paper before air drying. If you look closely at the printed image you will see that the ink blurs into the pattern required. The quality of inkjet printing is pretty good, especially for colour photos, but under scrutiny you can see the image is not as crisp as a laser printed image. Laser printers use a digital process that applies a laser beam and mirrors to project an image of the page onto an electrically charged rotating drum. Using a combination of heat and direct contact, the drum then transfers the image onto the paper. This process essentially burns the image onto your page making it crisp, smudge proof and permanent.
Choosing the right printer is important especially in consideration of the type of ink technology you will use in your future replacement ink cartridges. This article highlights some of the key factors to consider when choosing between an ink jet printer and a laser printer.
Firstly, both inkjet and laser printers can produce professional standard documents whether they are marketing brochures, reports, pictures or text documents. The price of both types of printers varies considerably and come with many options. In our opinion, we recommend you consider the cost of the actual printer plus the cost of replacement cartridges over of your printer's life. To do this you need to have a good idea of the type and volume of printing you will do. In general, big business and sophisticated small business/home users choose laser printers whilst small business and the average home user are happy with an ink jet printer.
Here is why we have come up with the above recommendation. Laser printers offer much faster and greater printing output than inkjet printers. This is because a toner cartridge can print between 2,500 to 10,000 pages before replacement. Laser printing is much faster than inkjet printing because, like a computer, a laser printer has an inbuilt memory enabling the image to be stored and accessed very quickly. This means that a simple page of text takes the same time to print as a complex graphic. Inkjet printers however have to spray each individual pixel onto the page meaning that large complex graphics takes a long time to print.
However, inkjet printers are extremely versatile and offer many advantages over laser printers. The initial cost of the inkjet printer is often cheaper than a laser printer and replacement cartridges appear inexpensive. However, you must take into account the yield, or output, from replacement inkjet cartridges as it is usually significantly less than laser toner cartridges. This means that you need to look at the cost per printed page to do a true and fair comparison. Indeed, laser printers are typically much cheaper to run over time if you print high volumes. Whilst text output of inkjet printers is very good, it is their ability to print high quality images and photos that makes them attractive.
Other issues to add to the purchase decision include options such as networking ability, paper tray configuration, media portability, memory, paper paths and optional font capabilities. Both types of printers have their advantages and disadvantages. We recommend you do a simple Google searchto further explore the differences between the two technologies.
