Prk- A Good Alternative To Lasik Eye Surgery

Talking abut Laser eye surgery, LASIK eye surgery will come into most peoples minds

. But do you know in some cases LASIK eye surgery can not work? Though LASIK eye surgery has less time for recovery and less pain, do you know there will be higher possibilities for complications and side effects? So under certain conditions, in order to treat our eye problems successfully, we have to resort to PRK for help. PRK is another kind of Laser eye surgery, which stands for photorefractive keratectomy. The following will introduce PRK in order to make people to know more about it.

For people who have thinner corneas, dryer eyes or other special conditions, the surgeon will not advise to perform LASIK eye surgery, but PRK instead. So PRK is considered to be a good alternative to LASIK eye surgery. PRK has the feature of longer recovery time, but less risk of complications.

You may wonder to know the procedure of PRK. The following will give some introduction on that. First, surgeons will place a ring on the surgical corneal area, in order to reduce the bonds of the corneal epithelium, he will use alcohol to fill it. Then the inner corneal layer will be exposed after moving the outer corneal layers by a surgical brush. Next, the laser will start to work. The surgeon will use an excimer laser, same as that used in LASIK eye surgery, to ablate and reshape the inner layers of the cornea. And then he will place a bandage contact lens over the surgical area. The functions of the lens are on one hand to permit the re-epithelialization of the cornea, on the other hand, to protect the cornea and make people more comfortable. For the contact lens, patients should bear in mind to test the contact lens on the eye to check if it is ok or if there is any infection of the wound.

The post operation care is also important for the success of PRK surgery. The contact lens can be removed between 4 to 7 days once the epithelium is fully healed. It is important we should try our best to avoid infection during this period. In common cases, patients have to use a topical antibiotic for not less than a week, such as Zymar, and a topical steroid for more than 6 weeks as well, like FML, which can reduce the swelling and improve patient comforts. But these two are not applicable for all patients, for example, if people have corneal haze or are allergy to certain drops, they have to use other eye drops. It is advised to follow your eye doctors instructions.
