Problems Using Tile That Creates Problems For the Installer

I can't believe how many times I've installed tile that wasn't square and it created great problems for me. I just got through installing some stone tile and I don't think I'll ever use this product again. I purchased it from one of the two large home improvement centers and needed to return about one fourth of the product.

I can usually install an area that's 12 foot by 18 foot using a 16 inch tile in less than eight hours, if the area is already prepped. However, installing these stone tiles took me at least twice as long and I ran into problems that I couldn't have ever imagined.

A majority of the tiles were too thick, cracked, chipped, damaged, split, out of square and different sizes. Anyone who knows anything about installing floor tiles can tell you that this is a big problem and a waste of your time, but I went for the gusto. I figured that if I could lay this tile, I could lay any tile and this would truly separate me from the other master craftsman, all over the United States.

I had to separate the tiles and actually lay out the entire project as I watched stacks of tile that needed to be returned get larger and larger. Even though I finish the project, I would like to recommend something to anyone who is attempting to use tile that has similar problems as those described above.

Before you purchase your floor tile, take 16 pieces out of the box and form a square starting with four titles at the top and then three rows of tile underneath your first row. Then place them tightly together and see if there are any angle gaps or tile's that aren't square.

If the grout lines between each tile aren't tight, I suggest finding another product or using a wider grout line, so that you can make adjustments along the way. I wouldn't have had as many problems with the stone tile, if I would have used a half-inch grout line, but that wasn't what I wanted. A good product can make a craftsman out of anyone, but bad products, can even make professionals like myself look like amateurs. Remember to always start with good square tile.
