Professional Film to DVD Transfer in Raleigh, NC
How Should I Archive My Film Transfer?
You did it! You transferred your film to DVD. You found those film reels in the back of your closet and, after all these years, now your family film reels are available to watch and share with your family at a moment's notice. No more concern whether those film reels will survive long enough to be transferred. No more wondering what precious family memories are locked away on each reel.
Are you done? That is up to you. If, after reliving those family memories, you decide they are worth protecting, you have several options.
1. Save the film. Film holds up remarkably well if properly protected. We have film from 1933 that looks great. Store the reels in an upright position. Over the years, if the reels are lying on their side, gravity will tend to warp and compress the edges. Keep the reels in a conditioned space and protected from dust. An attic or basement will subject the film to excessive heat, cold and moisture and will surely shorten the life of the film. If you smell a reel of film and it has a vinegary odor, the film has begun to break down. Have it looked at by an expert to determine if the film can be salvaged.
Why save the film? The advances in technology seem to be happening faster and faster. The resolution of your DVD has not captured the full resolution available on the film (maybe technology is not advancing as fast as we sometimes think!). There may be a new technology around the corner that would capture every bit of that resolution and make re-capturing the film an appealing option - if you still have the film.
2. Make a copy of the DVD. This makes sense for two reasons. A lot of things could happen to that DVD holding your precious family film memories. It could be scratched, lost, burned, become warped. The expected life of a DVD is an unknown, as well. When DVDs first came out, manufacturers were touting 100 year life spans. You don't hear those claims any more.
So make a backup DVD of your family films. Better yet, make several backups. Put one in a safe deposit box. Give one to your brother, your sister, your parents, your childhood friends that were in half the reels. What a great way to reconnect after all these years! Now you have what the experts call off site backup. You also have redundancy. You could have multiple accidents and still have a good copy available to make new copies.
3. Back up the DVD to a hard drive. With the advent of home media servers, your family home movies could be sharing the same drive with Harry Potter. Some technically savvy customers are even having their home movies transferred to a hard drive directly. This makes editing the movies much easier. Now they can make highlight DVDs for specific family members and for family friends.
You took the first big step and transferred your film to DVD. Now take that next small step and backup your family memories so they will always be around to enjoy.
