Choose one of the boxes in the anchor area to define where the additional space has to be added. Fill in the new dimensions for the canvas into the width and height boxes and click ok. Voila the canvas size has increased.

Cropping an image has to do with removal of irrelevant portions of the image, so that you are left with the portion that is relevant. To crop an image click on Crop in the tool box or select crop from the image menu. The mouse pointer will change into the crop tool shape when positioned over the image. Click and drag over the image to mark out the area to be retained. Now to crop the image one needs to press enter or cancel the command by pressing Esc.
