Profile Of Maria Miller Mp Minister For Disabled People

Maria Miller has been the Conservative MP for Basingstoke since 2005

. She was recently made Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Disabled People, Work and Pensions in May 2010.

Born in 1964 in Wolverhampton, Maria grew up in Bridgend in Wales. She attended Brynteg Comprehensive and went on to achieve a BSc in Economics at the London School of Economics.

Her early career began with a period at Greys Advertising Ltd. in 1985 as an advertising executive. She then moved to Texaco where she worked as a marketing manager. She returned to Greys as a director in 1995 for five years. She also became a director for Publicis Consultants in 1999, also becoming the Co-Chairman of the Gas Safety All Party Group and has subsequently been appointed to the Social Market Foundation Policy Advisory Board.

She began her political career in 1983 when she joined the Conservative Party. Having contested the Wolverhampton North East seat in the 2001 general election, she was defeated by the incumbent MP, Labour's Ken Purchase. She was later successfully elected as an MP in 2005. Upon becoming a Member of Parliament she spent a year as a member of the Trade and Industry select committee and was part of a cross party trade delegation to Ghana in 2005.

Also in 2005, Maria became spokesperson in the Shadow Education and Skills team. She went on to become the Shadow Minister for the family in 2007 and after the 2010 general election became Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Work and Pensions. She has also been Patron of the Wolverhampton North East Conservative Association and was also Chairman of the Wimbledon Conservative Association for a year.

Career events of note include securing a House of Commons debate to question the government about the future of Naomi Hose Children's Hospice which was stranded in financial difficulty when an Icelandic bank which held 5.7 million of its savings collapsed. She is ensuring the Government does not neglect to give Naomi House the support it needs.

She is also fighting on behalf of residents who want the government to address the issues of noise and congestion on the M3 which has been exacerbated by the number of new houses being built in the area. She has also led a successful campaign to arrange for a review and changes to the Blue Badge Scheme for under twos and people with severe mobility impairment which lasts less than three years. Previously ineligible for a blue badge, a concerted campaign with two mums of children with severe mobility impairment has led to a change in the law and these groups are now eligible for a blue badge.

Maria takes her role as an MP and Parliamentary Under Secretary seriously and is an avid campaigner on local issues, particularly education, family, health and education. She regularly speaks at local meetings in her constituency and makes frequent visits to schools and colleges. Maria has been married to Iain Miller since 1985 and has two sons and one daughter.
