Proper Golf Stance
Posture and alignment are the two keys to a proper golf stance
. If you want to be consistent when striking the golf ball, then being balanced will make the process a whole lot easier. A correct grip and a good stance will permit you to become successful and at the same time it will allow you to direct the flight of the ball, all the time, instead of just sometimes. You will become more consistent and predictable and that is an excellent thing in golf.
Staying Balanced
The set up for the swing is where balance begins. First, your feet should be a shoulder width apart, which is the general rule for mid irons. The longer clubs need a wider stance, while the shorter irons need a narrower stance. Your toe, the one closest to the target, should be rotated three inches toward the target, while the toe on the other foot should be pointed on a perpendicular plane to the target. Your knees should be slightly bent and your back should be straight. The weight of your body should be divided evenly between the balls of your feet and your heels, the club should be resting on the ground and your arms should form a v in front your body.
Ball Position
The kind of club you are using will determine where you will set up the ball. When driving the ball, move the ball two golf ball lengths from the center, towards the target. For the five wood and the long irons, the ball should be placed one golf ball length from the center, towards the target. With short irons the golf ball needs to be in the center of your stance.
Checking Ball Position
One way to check your ball position is to hold your club in your hands at waist high with your arms parallel to the ground. Next, bend over and drop your arms. Where ever the club head touches the ground is where the ball must be in your stance, so make sure you align yourself properly with the ball. If you are slouched too much, you will be forced into a bad posture which will make it difficult to strike the golf ball properly.
Good Posture
A fairly straight back, balanced foot position and your head angled with your spine will create a straight line, which will give you a proper golf stance and good posture. Make sure that your weight is evenly divided between the balls of your feet and your heels. Keep your chin tucked, your arms and wrist loose, not tense, and your knees should be bent slightly.
