Properly Maintaining Your Garden Shed

A garden shed is an important necessity when providing care for your plants

, fruits, and vegetables. It organizes your equipment and prevents the outside elements from penetrating the protective layers of your tools. If properly maintained, you are able to enjoy this amenity for years to come. However, if your shed is damaged beyond repair, maintaining an older shed can cost more than purchasing a new one. Doing so may also damage valuable tools along the way. Regardless of whether or not you are maintaining a new garden unit or a one you already own, there are easy steps to providing protection and gain many more years of use.

One of the most important parts to maintaining your garden building is ensuring all outside surfaces are treated. If not treated, moisture can cause the wood to rot and eventually cause a leak. In the summer, the wood may begin to crack and peel underneath the hot sun. This places both the structure of the building and your tools at risk. If your shed is metal, it is important to seal the outside to ensure rust will not be an issue.

Providing general upkeep and maintenance will also prolong the life of your unit. Ensuring your shed is structurally sound at all times can prevent further damage. This can be done so by tightening and lubricating hinges, fixing damaged tiles, and removing any debris that may collect on the roof. If the garden building is located under a tree, it's important to remember that limbs aid in the absorption of moisture as it provides a damp and cool place in its shade. Excess water will also run off the limbs and cause the roof to stay damp for a longer period of time.

While maintaining the outer appearance, the cleaning and maintenance of the inside is just as important. Be sure to sweep thoroughly and check any shelving to ensure no spills have been made. Washing your tools after use will prevent the build-up of dirt and chemicals on the floor and shelves. Keep a tight lid on any liquids and only set them on sturdy surfaces. Providing proper ventilation will also ensure heat will not be an issue throughout the summer, as the lack of ventilation may cause the build-up of condensation on your tools. Make it a habit to inspect and clean the inside of your garden shed at least two times a year.
