Properties And Uses Of Feldspar
Feldspar is among the most abundant minerals found in the earths crust and forms about 60% of the terrestrial rocks
. Feldspar is found in all kinds of rocks and thus, feldspar content present in various rocks forms the basis for their classification. It wont be an exaggeration to say that Feldspar is very much a part of our daily life. Most of the products like glass, floor tiles, tableware, etc. are made of Feldspar. What makes Feldspar so popular? Certainly its properties!
Properties Of Feldspar
The properties of Feldspar can be attributed to its chemical composition. Chemically, Feldspar minerals are silicates of aluminum, containing sodium, potassium, iron, calcium, or barium or blend of these elements. Feldspar minerals are extremely strong and have very high melting points. The melting process is very sluggish. Feldspars undergo decomposition in water and alkalies are extracted out. Because of the alkali and alumina content, Feldspar has become very useful for industries. We can differentiate three types of Feldspar i.e. Soda Feldspar, sodium, potassium and mixed Feldspar depending upon the sort of Alkali they contain.
Uses Of Feldspar
Feldspar is widely used in ceramic and glass industries. Feldspar is used both as a flux agent and as filler (in paint, plastic and rubber industries). Some of its major uses are as follows:
Ceramics: Feldspar is the second most important ingredient in the manufacture of ceramics, first being clay. In ceramics, the alkalis act as flux, lowering the melting temperature. Fluxes melt and bond the other components together. When used for tableware, Feldspar perfectly fuses with the other ingredients which make the product free from any defect.
Glass: Because it acts as a fluxing agent, Feldspar is also an important ingredient used in the manufacturing of glass. It helps to control the viscosity of glass. The alkali content present in the Feldspar works as a flux reducing the glass batch melting temperature. The alumina content in Feldspar improves durability, strength and corrosion resistance. The glass produced using Feldspar finds applications in television and computer screen, glass bottles, fluorescent tubes, car headlights, etc.
Fillers: Feldspar is also used as functional fillers in the paint, plastic, rubber and adhesive industries. Feldspar is also used in enamel composition which ensures that there are no defects in the final products.
Potash Feldspar is also used in the manufacturing of sanitary ware, ceramic tile glazes, etc. Feldspar is used for many applications due to its various benefits. Because of its properties, Feldspar has become a crucial industrial requirement.
