Protect Submerged Metal Structure Corrosion with Zinc Anodes
Zinc anodes are a mariner's best friend. This is because they sacrifice themselves to protect the costlier metals in submerged/buried vessels. Hence, they are also known as sacrificial anodes. Apart from zinc, there are also other metal anodes that are used for the purpose viz; magnesium, aluminum etc.
Zinc Anode Uses
The zinc anodes are generally used in saltwater, as their resistivity is lower in such environments. Among the various marine vessels where you would find the abundant use of these metal anode varieties are in hulls of boats and ships, boat propellers, gas/oil pipelines, marine engines, production platforms to mention just a few. However, zinc as an anode is not suitable for use in very high temperature, as it becomes passive and do not offer high performance.
How Do These Operate?
Well, so how do zinc anodes work? Well, as has been mentioned before, they get rusted before other metal components in a vessel are exposed to corrosion. But, you as a user should be able to detect the signals that these anodes send by sacrificing themselves. You should immediately replace the sacrificial anode as soon as it reaches the highest point of rusting. Otherwise, corrosion would attack your costly metal parts and your whole purpose of using zinc anodes, or for that matter any anode would be lost.
Zinc Anodes for Fishing Purpose
These anodes are especially popular among professional fishermen as well as occasional anglers. Their use in fish/crab traps enhances their shelf life. When used in traps, these traps become the cathode and sacrificial anode deteriorates much faster in the process. And when this reaches the maximum level, then a replacement metal is further added and the process continues.
Pitfalls of Sacrificial Anodes
However, not all's good with zinc anodes. They come with their share of disadvantages as well. When there's low driving voltage these boat zincs may fail to provide the desired effect. Moreover, all metal anodes increase the structural weight when they are directly attached to any structure. The biggest pitfall is that sometimes the anodes are costlier than the metals they have to protect. However, when you consider the overall expenses they work just great as sacrificial marine anodes.
Use zinc anodes and enjoy full proof resistance to corrosion in marine environment.
