Cold weather can be more damaging and drying to the skin than any other season. Not only are we exposed to wind and cold, but when we come indoors, we are then surrounded by the dryness of furnaces, fireplaces and heaters, which can dehydrate our skin further.

Skin that has been subjected to this type of damage not only becomes dry, but often ends up with red splotches, peeling and itchiness. Keeping your skin soft and hydrated is essential to protect it and keep it fresh and healthy.

Combating cold weather is all about moisture. However, it's more than just applying a moisturizing lotion or cream. One part of the process is rehydrating, while the other is preventing unnecessary loss of moisture.

Hot showers and baths strip your body of natural oils and actually dry out your skin. Instead, stick to warm water, and try adding a little oatmeal to your bath to replenish and nourish your skin. Don't rub yourself dry, but rather pat down lightly and apply a quality moisturizer while skin is still damp to seal in the hydration.

During colder seasons, you might wish to change your moisturizer to an organic oil-based cream instead of traditional water based ones. Natural oils such as coconut oil will help replenish your skin and keep it supple.

When you're planning to spend time outside, even if it's just shovelling the walk or driveway, always wear a good sunscreen. The sun is just as damaging in the winter months, since it gains strength by reflecting off the snow.

Skin care masks that peel away are more harmful when your skin is dry, again, stripping your natural oils away that are protecting your skin. Instead, try using a gentle foaming or wash away mask that doesn't dry on your skin. Oatmeal and milk makes a great moisturizing mask which also exfoliates.

Protecting your skin in cold weather can be a little more work, but with proper care you can achieve fresh and soft skin all year round.
