Prototyping 101

The idea of prototyping an idea can be overwhelming

, but it really involves the most basic steps that any inventor or entrepreneur can attempt. Of course, first things first, you have to have an idea for a new product or design that isnt currently on the market, or is an improvement of something already in existence.

Step 1: Plan the Prototype

Whether you are a sole inventor, business partners, project managers, or corporate team, planning the prototype is the very first step toward reaching your end goal. You want to collect as much information related to your idea as possible before diving in, so consider things like features and characteristics of the prototype, constraints, and benefits. Ask yourself if this idea offers something that would fill a niche on the market, or if the idea is overdone and potentially infringing on an existing patent.

Step 2: Sketch and Sculpt

The method by which you create a planned blueprint of your prototype will vary, but the most basic methods including sketching, sculpting, drafting, using a whiteboard, or even storyboarding. Newer technologies simplify this step with CAD systems and other software that can do the initial modeling for you. This has its advantage since it may be less time consuming, but you want to choose a method that will allow you to see any issues with the design as it currently stands.

Step 3: Work out the Details

Once those issues from the previous step are found, work on fixing them. This could mean redrawing a component, using a different type of material, tweaking a fine detail, or going back to the drawing board altogether. Dont trudge ahead with a prototype that poses issues; you have to get them worked out before advancing.

Step 4: Stay within Limits

Prototyping should not be an expensive process. If you are doing it yourself, stick to cheap, easy resources for that initial model. Spending too much time and money on a prototype will only allow the project to get off track, even to the point where you get frustrated and dont go through with it. Using a prototyping company that offers an affordable, professional solution from concept design to manufacturing may be the best route, so research companies to see if they offer a package or range of services that work within your budget. For anyone who isnt experienced in the prototyping process, this is by far the best way to go.
