Ps3 Vs Xbox 360 As Digital Media Server
I own and game when using Xbox
I own and game when using Xbox. This is also used as our media hub. I'd been an early adopter and was convinced that HD-DVD will be the wave from the 1080p hi-def own-your-own-media future. Umm, no. And MSoft is avoiding BluRay just like the plague going so far as to think of it as a "big bag of hurt". Ouch. What to do?
Therefore i got a PS3 Console slim 250GB player for Christmas with the primary purpose of playing BluRay movies.
It's a super easy installation.
Be advised this doesn't come with an HDMI cable if you decide to order one online, make sure to also purchase an
xbox 360 controller battery or 2 as opposed to setting it up for the local stores that charge 3 to ten times the maximum amount of. The PS3 Console will not supply even component cables which is a surprise in a way, but as nobody includes a modern TV Maybe you can see where Sony is covering the primary bases.
We have mine running an optical connection to the receiver; HDMI direct for the TV (Panasonic plasma). The only basis for this became because I only had one HDMI cable right at that moment thus , making this jury-rigged nonetheless it works fine.
It outputs at 1080p as advertised and is also simple fix. You will require your receiver manuals and TV manuals handy however it only takes about a quarter-hour about to rig this. My TV and receiver are pretty modern; both of them are a year old so they can make use of every one of the PS3 digital gee-gaws.
Again, look at your TV / receiver first to make sure they could match up to the PS3 Console's digital hotness. Otherwise you will be chagrined to not get 1080p on your own old TV etc.
The PS will discover your wireless network (for those who have one) and hook up with it automatically (until you need to insert passwords etc.; then its easy to understand to go in with your information and go). Also you can plug it right into a typical CAT5 jack (those blue computer wires are CAT5) should you have one handy. The world wide web connection could be the way they maintain your firmware with the Bluray player up-to-date. This was a issue w/ early Bluray players.
I'd been hopeful so it would play lossless .wma files such as Xbox does but it definitely doesn't like those files in the least. It sees them but won't play them. This is the technical issue that you wouldn't really find by reading the PS3 Console box and in all probability isn't much of a concern apart from geeks. Geeks like say, me.
To be a Bluray player it truly does work fine and is particularly very quiet in their operation. The Xbox appears like a dump truck driving by using a nitroglycerin factory compared. The image is very clear because you would anticipate plus the sound is top notch. It's really a amount of a mystery in the beginning the best way to operate the standard play / stop / start modes while using the little game controller but after dubbing around for some minutes you'll be able to figure it out. The sport controller is often a rechargeable unit so following your first hour or so you'll be able to unplug it through the
ps vita charger that continues on the top of the PS3 Console.
Haven't tried Netflix with this yet. About the Xbox it's seamless and straightforward; my understanding is for the PS you might need a disc to insert and you are able to play your 'watch it now' Netflix on the PS. That is pretty cool within the Xbox as you can occasionally get hi-def content free w/ your Netflix subscription and download. A feature to the PS? For some folks, sure. Will increase the Wife Approval Factor that is critical.
Being a media server, the Xbox seems to be better climax way harder to create the Xbox. Perhaps because I had the Xbox set up already the PS could 'find' media files much quicker. As noted though, it doesn't 'like' lossless format whereas the Xbox plays lossless .wma. This is the big problem for those who have saved your CD's to an external drive or something. In the event you haven't done that yet and buy a
ps3 move charger station then just be aware of the limitations in advance. For most of us it is a non-issue.
As being a standalone Bluray player in all probability it doesn't add up with regard to its high price. However, unless you have an Xbox but you will involve some of your respective digital media (e.g. pictures / videos / .mp3s) saved on your own local network so you will not want plenty of gear to learn your .mp3 / iPod files on your stereo than the is a good choice. If all your stuff is in Microsoft formats, the Xbox can be a better media server / erstwhile game unit.
