Public Resources For Oui Prevention

A great number of online articles and tools focus solely on what law enforcement

or the court view as important information for those who are arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol in Maine. This is not a bad thing, and is often the perfect way to deter people from getting even a first offense for this serious issue. However, they are normally focused entirely from the prosecution's standpoint, and feature information regarding punishment in many different forms.

What may be of greater use to the general public is information on how to prevent an OUI charge, and there are many organizations that are very helpful in this regard. Instead of simply telling people what will happen if they get caught, and not everyone gets caught, it is preferable to tell them how to get rid of the problem in the first place. Operating under the influence is often only a symptom of what can potentially be a much larger problem, such as alcohol dependence or addiction.

Obviously, the best way to avoid an OUI from the public's perspective is simply to abstain from drinking when you even think you might be driving later. This is great advice, and a very effective method. There are many websites dedicated solely to great ways to tell your friends that you cannot or will not join their drinking festivities when alcohol is present. Although these websites are very helpful, and work well for many people, they do not address the underlying cause of the problem and are often only short-term fixes to preventing OUIs. This may not be the best way to get through to everyone.

Public resources are also available through a wide variety of websites for similar prevention methods, such as realistic goals to minimize impairment, or calculating your blood alcohol content, to why you should only drink at home, and so on. MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) and similar agencies based all over the United States offer many ways to deal with the emotional problems that lead to drinking in excess in the first place, thus preventing the OUI charge from ever happening.

Sometimes, the best answer is a soft or indirect one. Rather than screaming about how what they are doing is dangerous, could kill them, or could become very costly in court, choose to help them do something about the root cause of the problem. Helping someone overcome the problems, stress, and situations that lead to drinking alcohol can be the best way to help them avoid operating a vehicle in that state. Even if it is as simple as offering to be a designated driver, this can be a great way to help a friend begin to recognize a problem and deal with it in a more positive manner.
