Puppy Purchasing Power Minus the Mill's
The only things you should be buying from a mill are flour or firewood, never puppies. Many times people in the market for a puppy buy one from a mill because they are not educated on the subject. Because you are reading this, I can tell already that you are a responsible pet owner. Today we will discuss the facts you need to know regarding puppy purchasing and how to avoid puppy mills. By the time you are finished reading this you will be well versed on puppy mills and will know how to avoid them.
How to NIP Puppy Mill's
The word NIP will help you remember how to avoid puppy mills. Let me explain further; Newspaper Ads, Internet sites and Pet stores are the top three places to avoid, thus the NIP. Pet stores often purchase puppies from mills and even though they will claim it isn't true they won't be able to produce significant documentation proving it isn't true. Newspaper ads and Internet sites may lure you in with a cute puppy picture or a special sale. They will make all sorts of claims: the puppy is from royal blood lines or the mother or father was a show dog and the list of lies goes on and on.
All Breeders Are Not Bad
Puppy mills have given good breeders a bad rap and that isn't fair. Breeders are still an excellent resource for buying a puppy, just do some research and make sure you are buying from a responsible breeder. Check out the property where the pups are kept and ask yourself these questions; is it clean, safe, do the animals have space to run, do they have food, water, can the breeder provide references, are the dam and sire present? If the answer to all of the questions was "yes" then you probably found a good place to buy a puppy.
Animal Shelters are OK
Buying a puppy from an animal shelter is another alternative to buying from a mill. They typically have many puppies in all shapes and sizes. But buyers beware, at an animal shelter you still could be getting a puppy that was the result of a mill, you never know who brought the puppy in or why. It's a great thing to rescue an animal from a shelter but if it was a mill puppy, it could have health or behavior issues down the road. Just be cognizant of what could happen in the future.
Share the Knowledge
Now you know how to avoid and NIP puppy mills. You know good breeders are not that bad and animal shelters are not always good. The fastest way to put a puppy mill out of business is to not give it any business. Many people won't even shop at pet stores that carry puppies because they are aware that many of the puppies come from puppy mills. The more we talk about puppy mills the more awareness we will create. Share what you know and maybe together we can make puppy mills a thing of the past.
