There is a misconception that a pension plan is like a severance package, it should not be seen as such. In severance benefits, the plan holder receives a lump sum amount with corresponding taxes. Meanwhile, a pension plan is being done over a certain number of years and often it doesn't incur taxes and interest during the plan is funded.

A pension plan can help a lot, particularly to those with children and dependent family members. They are able to continue providing monetary support even after their retirement and even after death. It is common that plan holders usually keep and intend to award certain beneficiaries such as their loved ones. They want to provide a financial security to their family after retirement, and even after their death.

In several countries, the government creates and maintains a pension plan program for their citizens. This is a type of program wherein a certain deduction from wages and salary over the years of working are credited to the person's pension plan account, or to the taxpayer. When the citizen reaches a legal age for retirement, the individual can apply for the government's pension program, thus receiving monthly payments based on the income level of the person over his working life.

It is important to have a pension plan program as an assurance that a person can still support himself even after retirement and provide financial support to dependents after death.
