Purposeful priorities allow the flexiblility to satisfy customers


Having the ability to remain flexible is one of the primary ways of helping to provide for higher levels of customer satisfaction. Invariably, a customer will have an unusual request and will require some sort of accommodation from your internal systems and protocols. While this should always be the exception, rather than the rule, there are times when it will be necessary to demonstrate flexibility.

One of the keys to flexibility is having a proper sense of priorities. The reason some people can be more flexible than others is because they can rightly discern what the most important things are, and they can recognize that if some other lower priority task needs to be bumped, it can be, without causing a major disruption in the overall flow of work, thereby allowing an unusual customer request to be worked in.

If you find yourself becoming frustrated when unexpected events happen, then perhaps you do not have a proper sense of priority. Not everything is the most important thing. It cannot be so. If that is how your days and weeks are scheduled, then you may need to re-evaluate your time, re-think your schedule, and learn to prioritize more efficiently.

Keep the customer as the primary priority in all of your activities. This helps to alleviate some of this inner tension and scheduling conflicts. Knowing that there is an ultimate priority keeps your work cycles in the proper perspective during unexpected changes. Embracing these types of changes can be unsettling at first, but then, when they begin to bear fruit, it makes the initial discomfort seem less abrasive.

If change is viewed in its proper perspective, it can be a source of great strength that opens new possibilities and new opportunities to provide higher levels of customer satisfaction.
