We know so many people that we don't actually know. The people on our TVs and radios, the people in our magazines and newspapers -- they populate a second world that we recognize as a part of our lives. It's all very strange and a little unsettling, but the point is: these people come from somewhere. They're real people, like yourself, who do a job that's perhaps a bit more interesting than the average, but it's available to many people. All it takes is commitment, enthusiasm, and a good talent agency.

Which is very different from a bad talent agency. Those are the ones who look to exploit people and take their money while doing no work. Sure, no agency should ever guarantee work, but some are going to work harder for you than others. Some are going to be as dedicated to you as you are to them. Those are the ones you want to seek out.

First Things First

You'll need to get model composites made. These are the photo sets that agencies use to find jobs for you. Often the agency can handle these composites. Other qualities to seek out are those two special little words: fully licensed. And take a peek at the client list -- you should ideally see some names you know.

Next, take a look in the mirror. What do you see? What kinds of work do you want to do? There are plenty of options. There's work to be had if you're dedicated to it. You could be in magazine ads or commercials, you could be on the runway. You could also potentially be in one of a number of TV shows or music videos or even, just maybe, in a movie. It's just a matter of working hard and getting in front of the right people.

And what are those people looking for? All kinds of faces, bodies, voices. The everyday look is as desirable as the exotic look, in large part because commercials and TV shows are made up of people who look familiar to you and me. So it's important not to count yourself out because you don't have some crazy look. Also, talent agencies look for people of all ages and experience levels, so chances are there's a job out there for you somewhere if you start looking.

And this is why it's so important to build a relationship with an agency you can trust. They're the ones who are helping you navigate this strange and interesting industry. And you want to be able to rely on the agency, make sure they have your best interests in mind, not just what's in your wallet. After that it's pretty much up to you to win the world over with your smile, with your charisma, and with your hard work.
