. Larger than the Great Pyramid of Egypt, the Mausoleum is the burial spot of Chinas first Emperor, Qin Shi Huang from the Qin Dynasty who began to rule the country as a whole in the year 221 BC. The Mausoleum is located in a picturesque spot in the eastern part of the Lintong County approximately 35 kilometers away from the city of Xian. To its south lies the Lishan Mountain, whilst the Mausoleum overlooks the meandering Wei River in the north. Exuding an aura of enchantment and ancient history, the Mausoleum covers an area of approximately 2 kilometres and is reputed to be filled with numerous buildings and relics that are hundreds of years old.

Emperor Qin Shi Huang ascended to the royal throne at the tender age of 13. He is considered to be a great militarist and politician from Chinas colourful past who revolutionized the countrys social and political history. He not only unified China as one country and was responsible for building the countrys first Great Wall, but he also brought about many significant changes that included the standardizing of the Chinese currency and language among its various states. Shortly after becoming King, he began to build the Mausoleum believing it to be a way to enjoy life everlasting after his existence upon the earth.

The Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum is a city within itself containing an inner city and an outer city. The Mausoleum is reputed to have taken 38 years to build with a labour force numbering over 700,000 workers. Countless tombs of the workers who built it surround the Mausoleum testifying to the intense labour work that was put in to build this historic landmark. Several palace buildings and vaults that are home to precious materials and treasures are said to be beneath this historic mound, of which some have been discovered by archaeologists over the years. One of the discovered treasures at the site is the world famous collection of the ancient Qin Terracotta Horses and Warriors that was found in the Mausoleum.
