Qualifications required for high level maintenance workers
Any job that requires an individual to work at height can only be performed by a suitably qualified person. Fields as diverse as concert light rigging, construction, oil drilling on offshore rigs, and high level maintenance of all kinds from glazing repairs to lightbulb replacement and billboard cleaning are covered by the same legislation and require workers to undergo the same training. The work at height qualification scheme for the UK is called the IRATA or Industrial Rope Access Trade Association scheme. Registered persons will have an understanding of and practical experience in working at height within the health and safety requirements of our laws, but the IRATA training system is so good that qualified workers are in demand for high level maintenance and construction jobs all around the globe, not just in the UK. It's almost universally acknowledged as the best standard in the world. There are several levels of IRATA training. Anyone working at height on glazing maintenance or any other task is required to at least have an IRATA level 1 qualification. The training to get even this first level of certification usually lasts at least a week and both practical and theoretical testing is rigorous for every candidate. Passing the final exam is by no means a given and a good many candidates are required to take the training again and re-sit. Sloppy or dangerous practices and habits just aren't tolerated. All IRATA level one workers need to be supervised by a level three operative, who will have years of experience and be able to resolve potentially dangerous situations and deal with the unexpected quickly and safely. It's also their responsibility to ensure that the level one personnel are working as they should be, safely and efficiently. Level two IRATA operatives still need the supervision of a person with a level three certificate, but they are qualified to rig their own ropes and build anchors for others.
