Quit Smoking and Save Money
If you care about how much money you have to spend on the necessities of life, or the fact that you don't have enough of it, quitting smoking would be the best thing you could do. Want proof? Let's do the math.
On average in the US, a pack of cigarettes costs $6. That makes each cigarette about 30 cents. If you want to be frugal, you'll buy them in cartons which reduces the cost to about $5/pack making each cigarette cost 25 cents. Now, let's say you smoke only ten cigarettes a day. 10 cigarettes times 25 cents equals $2.50. Not much, right? Well, multiply that by 365 days in a year and you get $912.50.
Don't know about you but 900 bucks is not something most people want to see going up in smoke... quite literally.
But how many people do you know that only smoke ten cigarettes a day? There are far more nowadays, what with the bombardment of anti-smoking advertisements and such, but there are still many who smoke a pack a day, and some even more. So, if you smoke a whole pack that would be $5 per day. Within a year you will have smoked $1,825 worth of tobacco.
Do you know what can be bought with $1,825 every year? That much money could cover groceries for about 15 weeks. If you are a frugal grocery shopper, it'll stretch even further. With that much money you could also buy yourself a high end laptop computer one year, a top-of-the-line refrigerator the next or a spiffy lawn tractor the year following that, with a bit of money to spare. If you were to save that $1,825 for five years, you could buy a pretty decent car with the cash you saved.
Now let's imagine you started smoking at age sixteen and you are now thirty-six years old. On average you smoked ten cigarettes a day for 20 years. Ten cigarettes a day times 365 days a year equals 3,650 cigarettes. Let's say on average each cigarette cost 10 cents, taking into account they were cheaper then. That would be $365 per year. Multiply that by 20 years and you get $7,300. That's $7,300 you could have sitting in a bank instead of having absolutely nothing to show for it. If you smoke a pack a day, double that amount to $14,600.
Need more proof that quitting smoking could save you tons of money within a lifetime?
If you continue to smoke those ten cigarettes a day for another 28 years until you are 64 years old, you will have smoked $17,520 worth of cigarettes. If you manage to live to the life expectancy of 77 years, that would be an extra, $4,745 making the grand total $27,010 saved in a lifetime. Doubt you need anyone telling you what you could have done with that money, if you hadn't smoked it all.
That was how my husband finally convince his own father to quit smoking. He had smoked a pack a day for 48 years and roughly spent $17,000. He couldn't believe it. Unfortunately for him and his family, it was too late. He died of lung cancer two and half years later with nary a penny to his name.
Regardless if you wish to ignore the health benefits of quitting smoking, you cannot deny that quitting would save you tons of money. It's your choice, of course. It's still a free country, as far as we can tell, anyway, and you can do as you please. But if you are a smoker wishing for incentive to quit, saving this much money ought to do it. So, if you are looking for a way to save some serious cash, quitting smoking would be a great way of doing just that. With the tax on a pack of cigarettes going up from 50 cents to $2 in most states, now is the time to seriously consider quitting if only for the sake of your wallet.
