RTA Kitchen Cabinet Installation Tips
Most Ready-To-Assemble kitchen cabinets are designed to minimize the work required from the end user. However, following the manufacturer's assembly instructions is sometimes not enough. Unfortunately, errors are highly likely to occur especially if a beginner is working on the installation.
Experience is definitely a great teacher, but if you are lacking a few successful DIY jobs under your belt, you can avoid ruining your kitchen cabinet installation by following the suggestions listed below.
Make sure you have all the tools necessary to complete the job. While you won't need a whole array of carpentry tools, the following are a must:
Levels one 2feet and one 4 feet level
Power drill with screwdriver bits and drill bits up to inch in diameter
Rubber-tipped squeeze clamps one that can open at least 6 inches wide
Belt sander
Saw or a power saw to cut pieces of lumber and filler strips
Get the correct type of screws. If your flat pack comes without the right screws, the manual should have a list of what kind you need to get. Do not use long drywall screws as these are not strong enough to hold up wall cabinets. When in doubt, use three inch screws to mount the wall cabinets to the wall stud. Use shorter screws to secure the cabinets together.
Install wall cabinets first. This will help you avoid working over the base cabinets. However, if you've already installed the base cabinets, remove the wall cabinet doors first to make them lighter then have a couple of people hold them up for you while you mount it to the wall.
Align the cabinets properly then use the squeeze clamps to hold the frames in place. This will help you achieve a professional fit when screwing the cabinets together.
The wall cabinet screws need to penetrate at least 1.5 inches deep into the wall stud. Take time to find the location of the studs but it would be better if you use a stud locator.
Fillers boards and shims are usually needed when installing RTA kitchen cabinets. These ensure that your cabinets fit perfectly without any gaps showing, but installation can be quite tricky. Use your table saw and belt sander to cut and trim the filler strips.
