Radio Waves And Their Role In Modern Communications
Radio technology is used in a number of different household appliances including the microwave oven
, cordless telephones, remote controls, wireless Internet, and baby monitors. In the beginning radio waves were only used to transmit audio signals, (conversations), however these days it is common for them to be used to send pictures and videos too. Radio frequencies are defined as the transmission of signals through a space by modulation of electromagnetic waves, and they encompass everything below visible light.
As electromagnet waves are basically sound, they travel in oscillating fields, and the phase width, the frequency and the amplitude are all altered to transmit information, is then received by a conductor that transforms the signal into sound or other forms of information such as pictures or video, using an alternating current. This is the technology that allows the modern day cordless telephone to operate, where radio waves are transmitted back and forth between the handset and the base of the phone. This useful telephone innovation first came about in 1965, when a jazz singer by the name of Teri Pall first realised the benefits of having a phone that was not corded, and nowadays it is found in millions of households all around the world. The first models of the cordless phone were only able to operate on low frequencies and this meant that they were susceptible to interference from other devices transmitting radio waves and also lacked security. The modern cordless phone can now function across long distances without any interference as it uses higher frequency broadcasts.
Radio technology is also used for wireless Internet connections; this might be in a household or for a public establishment such as a caf or bar. By using radio waves to allow people to get online users of desktop computers, laptops, mp3 players, and smartphones are all able to log on to the Internet without the need for a wire. This has significant implications as the Internet can allow people to make video calls around the world, or to communicate via social networking websites and email.
No doubt many of you will be aware that one of the first uses of radio technology was for walkie-talkies; radios were and still are used by emergency services and other similar organisations. This implementation of radio technology is similar to that of the baby monitor. Although the two are similar there are some differences - walkie-talkies operate on a half duplex channel meaning they can pick up a range of different signals, (in case someone is trying to reach them), baby monitors however use high frequencies and scrambling technology to remove interference.
