The GROUP A officers are placed through UPSC

For recruitment in Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS), Civil Service Examination has to be cleared.

For recruitment in Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS), Combined Engineering Service has to be cleared.

The group c employees are promoted to fill in GROUP B posts.

The railway exam for GROUP C is the largest. Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) holds the examination for Group C officers of railways. All 19 boards individually take care of recruitments of Group C. Any kind of regional or linguistic difference is not given any importance. Group C placements are done for the following signal and mechanical inspectors, Station Masters, motormen and guards. In this group also division exists in technical and no technical areas.
