. Certainly, not all students are members of fraternities and sororities but despite this fact, Greek letter societies are very influential and important for student life in college. Many high school students and applicants dream of becoming members of Greek letter societies. Types of fraternities and sororities
These student organizations can be roughly divided into three types according to the main purposes they serve:
community services;
career advancement;
academic achievement.
Also there is the division of fraternities and sororities into two types: honor fraternities and social fraternities. Their basic difference is that the first type unites members of both sexes while social fraternities are for male members only and it is not difficult to guess that sororities are for female student of a particular college.
Honor fraternities can be organized on the basis of the majors of students. Thus, they resemble academic student clubs.
Social fraternities and sororities prescribe certain social duties to their members. They take part in charity; organize special events for students on campus.
The rules for the members of fraternities
The first thing to mention is that usually Greek letter societies establish strict rules for their members and demand their strict observance.
There are certain rules pertaining to the academic achievement of brothers and sisters. It will not be prestigious for the organization to keep losers among its members. However, if a member is lagging behind or has problems with studies, his/her brothers/sisters are always ready to help.
An essential rule is to respect the code of the Greek letter organization. Every member should know it and respect it.
