Rarely Known Catfish Facts
People are always fascinated with the catfish because of the taste and the size
. However, there are some things that people don't know about the cats such as the handling, storing and the nutritional value of the catfish. Some of the more common facts are the sense of smell, the scavenger and how to catch the catfish.
The catfish is an ugly looking fish that some people perceive as a bullhead, but the catfish has a different look than the bullhead. They are however, both scavengers, but only the catfish will give you the true taste of a catfish.
The Scavenger
The cats are scavengers that prey on dead things or things that are in distress. They will feed off the bottom, but if the water temperature is colder, they will become suspended in the water so that they can have the oxygen that they need to breathe or find an area where the water is being oxygenated. The fish will keep the bottom of the waters clean because they do eat things that would otherwise sit on the bottom of the water and decay.
Catching the Catfish
There are two ways that people catch the catfish, but only one is popular. One way is with a rod and reel. This is the popular and accepted way in most states.
In 11 states, people can go noodling for catfish, which is catching the fish with the hands. Noodling can be a dangerous way to catch a catfish, but many people enjoy this sport. Unfortunately, this is not something that you can just do without instruction and someone experienced teaching you. The idea is to find the catfish hole, stick the hands into the hole, and hope it is a catfish you pull out and not a snapping turtle or something else that can injure you.
Catfish Sense of Smell
The catfish has an incredible sense of smell. This is why stink bait works the best for luring the catfish to the bait. Cats can smell something that is a good distance away. There sense of taste is extraordinary. They have over 5,000 taste buds in one square centimeter of their bodies. The taste buds work in the same way as the sense of smell. It helps the catfish find food. As the bait is thrown in the water, the bait sets off chemicals in the water that are tasted before the cat even reaches the source.
