A television reality show is a genre of television programming that features dramas

or humorous situations, documentary of actual events, makeover sagas, celebrity exposes, dating shows, talent amusements and just about any kind of competition that you can or cannot imagine. Reality show producers typically shoot hundreds of hours of footage and use creative editing to create a narrative thread. Reality TV has wrung from radio game show and amateur talent competition to hidden camera show to dating show to documentary-style series. Reality shows employ ordinary people instead of professionally trained actors. The genre adopts unscripted shows and focuses on footage of real events or situations and the actor of a reality show may be given some rudimentary directions off-screen, but the point is to make them act and react as normally as possible.

The concept of the show will be created by someone like the producer or story editor. Unlike scripted shows like sitcoms, dramas and newscasts, reality TV does not rely on writers and actors. Usually the producers or story editors assemble script and important tools necessary for molding the direction of the show and this benefits the show by keeping the production costs low and also allows reality shows to keep on rolling even when a writers' strike hits as the people involved in directing a reality show are not recognized by any union or does not belong to Writers Guild of America. Much of the show is run by producers and a team of editors; it helps preserve the idea that the shows are real and unscripted. Because of this, it is a very affordable programming option from a production standpoint -- and it's why networks are clambering to add reality content.

Reality television frequently depicts a modified and highly influenced form of reality and at times utilizing luridness to attract viewers. The defining aspect of reality TV is probably the manner in which it is shot. The people who participate in the show might be auditioned or hired in some way but the footage is shot in a real setting. The people or actors of the show are often placed in exotic locations or abnormal situations or in front of a live studio audience that participates in the program and are often required to act in specific ways or like how the script demands. The other 50s show is Queen for a Day a radio crossover involving female contestants competing for household appliances by creating sympathy. Then, there were game shows like Beat the Clock and Truth or Consequences that involved contestants in sappy competitions, stunts, and real jokes.

Reality shows like I'd Like to See and You Asked for It required viewers to cast votes to help determine the course of events. Few others that belong to this family are Chuck Barris: The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and The Gong Show, One Man and His Dog, Living in the Past, COPS, Nummer 28, Expedition Robinson that later came to be known as Survivor. The present day shows like American Idol, Big Brother, Dancing With The Stars, The Amazing Race, The Bachelor and Project Runway have taken Reality TV Programming to the next level.
