. This beautiful Austrian city, which blends the old and new, is situated along the Salzbach River, on the country's border with Germany. It offers a view into medieval periods with its castles and fortresses and is the city where Mozart was born.

Here are a few of the interesting places to visit.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

The fortress was constructed in the eleventh century and it among the most well-preserved fortresses in Central Europe. It is also among the largest ones. The fortress towers over Salzburg and provides spectacular panoramic views of the entire city, making it a great place for taking pictures. One place you'll have a great view of is the city's old section, known as Alstadt.

You travel by funicular to reach the top of the fortress and will need a guided tour to explore the inside of the fortress. Inside is a complete city of its own kind. The Golden Room has intricate Gothic carvings that are a beauty to behold. The fortress also holds medieval weapons, instruments of torture and medieval princes' apartments.

St. Peter's Cemetery

Do not be afraid to visit St. Peter's Cemetery. There are catacombs that were carved into a mountain-side from as far back as the third century. The graves have been tended with great care, making it hard to believe that they have lasted for centuries! In the middle of the cemetery is a Gothic chapel. It is worth the time to read the grave markers.

Salt Mines

Did you know that the name Salzburg is derived from the word salt? Salt is closely associated with the city and you can learn the history of the salt trade while in Salzburg. Brace yourself for some adrenaline-pumping fun as you get into the mines via a fast-traveling little train. No need to worry about getting dirty though; you will be given special attire to put on prior to embarking. Discover the underground lake with a ride on a boat.

Outdoor Experience

There are plenty of outdoor activities to do around Salzburg as well. Whether you want to hike in the mountains or just take a stroll within the city, you will experience beautiful scenery that will make the hike or stroll well worth it. Plenty of water sport activities are available as well.
