It's a record 103` heat at New York City that continues even on Wednesday testing the patience and resilience of anybody who tried to venture out on the street. While the temperature kept soaring up on Tuesday the power suppliers also warned the city that the intensity of the heat wave this summer could limit the power grid and hence disrupt the power supply across NY.
The prolong heat wave has surpassed the temperatures in the Boston province and Philadelphia both recording high temperatures. The heat wave has been so intense that a 92 year old lady was found dead in her residence in Philadelphia.
The weather forecasters have revealed that the temperatures would be still high on Wednesday but likely to be slightly lower later in the day. Con Edison officials used automated calls on Tuesday night to appeal to the customers to conserve power and turn off electrical appliances that is not essential as the power consumption reached record levels.
The effects of the heat wave has been drastic and the city pools are filling up faster and people are resorting to cooling centers for cooling foods and drinks to ward off sun stroke. Hospitals are also giving out jars of ice water to elderly patients and exhausted fire fighters.
But even as the Con Edison officials are optimistic about the city surviving the heat wave they did not rule out a possible black out in the city since the heat wave could have a cumulative effect on the cables and transformers. New York has already experienced several black outs in the last half century.
In Washington trains were ordered to operate at least 20 miles per hour under maximum speeds due to the heat leading to longer commutes. Many places are also experiencing water shortage as most of the water is above boiling temperatures and could not be drunk.
