Antique bottle hunting can always be accompanied by the potential of hazardous and

or harmful effects to the detriment of those in pursuit of their treasures. It would be very foolish to venture into any search area without considering the possibility of incurring even a minor injury. This possibility is amplified when your search leads you into a real tropical rain forest.

Before stepping off onto your desired quest, always leave a detailed route map of your starting point, intended search area, and expected time of return with a responsible party. Give yourself plenty of time, because the density of the jungle growth can vary widely. Do not rely on your cell phone for guarantied communications, as there is the possibility your signal will not get out.

Your equipment must include a well stocked first aid kit, a good compass, fire starting items (if you have to spend the night), ample water, food items, insect repellent plus your digging tools. A sharp machete is a must.

When working your way to your targeted area, you will be stumbling and tripping over roots, vines and debris on the surface. You should have fashioned a walking stick to help prevent falls. There are many thorn producing plants in the jungle, one of the worst is the black palm which is very narrow and has very large formidable thorns. If loosing your balance, it is almost an automatic response to reach out to grab the first available object to prevent falling. This is where you must condition yourself to avoid that impulse and rely on your walking stick.

Remove any thorns as quickly as possible, rinse with water, treat with an antiseptic and cover with bandage. The same procedure should be followed with any cuts or abrasions to prevent any infection. Do not ignore hygienic standards that keep you healthy.

As there are several species of venomous snakes in the rain forest, plus all the debris on the surface, heavy durable boots are a must. Tennis shoes, sandals or other light foot wear is only asking for trouble. Your dressing for the jungle, not a social affair or seeking a comfort zone.
