Recovering From A Root Canal: Tips That Can Help

In times past, a root canal was typically accompanied by a great deal of pain in the days following the procedure

. While dental care hasn't quite reached the point where the procedure is pain-free, the discomfort has been greatly reduced. Nevertheless, there will be a period of a few days where you might not feel 100%. If you are experiencing some pain as you recover from the operation, here are some tips that may help you cope. Obviously, the first line of advice should always come from your dentist. Don't do anything to alleviate pain without first consulting him.

Ibuprofen

Unless you have allergies to the active ingredients, ibuprofen is a very safe method of controlling pain from a root canal. It comes in brand names such as Advil, though there is no reason why a generic store brand wouldn't work just as well. The brand names, however, are usually coated, which can provide extra stomach protection. Ibuprofen is often superior to acetaminophen (Tylenol) in conditions that involve the teeth. This is because much of the pain comes from swelling, which ibuprofen addresses.

Prescriptions

If you don't feel as though over the counter pain relievers are doing the trick, you can ask your dentist for a prescription strength pain medication. It is usually worth it to try OTC medicines first, but if the pain is too great, you shouldn't have to suffer. Take the medication as directed and don't take more than has been prescribed. On the other hand, medication such as this usually works more efficiently if you don't wait until the pain is overwhelming before taking it. Though your heart might be in the right place, it's not a good idea to try and stretch out the times between dosages.

Orajel

Orajel and other creams and lotions work by numbing the surfaces of the mouth they come into contact with. This can provide temporary relief from the worst of the pain. It won't do anything for swelling, however, so make sure you are also addressing this underlying issue. As with everything else, make sure you consult with your dentist before applying Orajel. There may be a reason that you should not take it to relive pain from your root canal.

Soft Foods

A lot of people make the mistake of pushing themselves back to a solid food diet after having a root canal. It's understandable, of course. It's not fun eating applesauce and other soft foods at every meal. Nonetheless, you should give yourself ample time to heal before tackling a normal diet.
