Recovery For Anorexia Depends On Grasping The Disease
Help for anorexia is wide and prevalent however this is a frustrating condition to treat. The mental challenges and torments can be draining and depressing. Appreciating the causes and triggers of the disease can help anorexia survival. There is real tragedy for the parent of the affected person. Parents watch in dismay as their once healthy baby grows into a sad and desperately unhappy teen with an eating disorder hell bent on harming themselves. Many parents are exasperated and completely helpless and suffer in anguish as nobody seems to be able to help their child in the battle of anorexia survival. The first symptoms are often in the early teens as young girls (and increasingly teenage boys) start to examine their bodies as sexual maturity and puberty begins. They may examine themselves in the mirror and ask you whether they are fat. They may obsess over magazines of waif like models and they start to envy the glamour of the fashion magazines. The parent doesn't recognise a problem initially as most teenagers go through a certain angst with their appearance and start to obsess with popular culture. The social media and fashion pages have a lot of responsibilty for the plight of fragile teenage obsessions. The fashion industry portrays the image of stick thin models as healthy, hip and modern. Skinny is "in" on the catwalk and the ironic tragedy is that the female body is not healthy in such a condition. Poor body condition compromises female vitality, health, beauty and fertility. With modern digital photography and manipulation of images, the fashion model's body lines, wrinkles and even bags under the eyes are removed. The 'perfect' female form is digitally remastered as an image (no longer a photograph) on the covers of magazines and billboards the world over. Popular media feeds image after image to insecure teenagers who are hungry for pop culture. This mass popular media disillusions young people to what is real and actually normal. Anorexia survival becomes challenging when you have to fight against this mass off popular culture feeding your sick child confusing images of what a "normal" body shape is.In this world of teenage existential angst there is sometimes a trigger that converts this melting pot of young hormones, insecurities and angst into very serious psychological illnesses such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia. Teenagers may react badly to a peer calling them "fat" at the time of a major disappoitment in their lives. The victim associates and connects being fat with the disappointment. The teenager may miss the cut off time for a sporting event or underperform in a sporting team or miss higher selection in a sport or a performing art or they might simply lose a relationship with a member of the opposite sex. There is often a trigger for the disease which connects body weight to the tremendous disappointment and the deadly game for anorexia survival is triggered.Anorexia and bulimia is about locking people out and not admitting to yourself that you have a problem. Bulimia also has a furtive elemnt to it where they indulge and feel so bad about themselves after the indulgence that they feel it necessary to purge. The cruel reality in the beginning is that society tells them "they look fantastic" when they initially shed some body weight. Society tends to reward the self destructive behavious be offering positive commenst to the weight loss which reinforces the condition. When the individual progresses past being slimmer to dangerously underweight, society turns its back and is too afraid to say anything for fear of offending delicate sensibilities.Medical treatment is often unrewarding in anorexia survival. Group therapy can be counter productive because the patients become competitive about who is the sickest. Group sessions can also sometimes fail due to the comeraderie that develops amongst the group which supports and helps each other on an individual and "team" level. When the group is disbanded, the emotional support group is disconnected and the patient relapses into the eating disorder.Neuroplasticity varies from conventional treatment. If traditional psychological treatments and group therapy just isn't working and you are desperate to find help, neuroplasticity might be worth considering.
