Recruitment Cape Town: Talking IT with Willi Zaaiman

Staff Recruitment Cape Town:

Good day. My name is Willi Zaaiman. I work for West Coast Personnel in the IT position.

I was fortunate enough to go into IT in 1974 when I was able to join a company in Johannesburg and to work on a Burroughs 500 computer, which was an analogue machine in those days. We had card reader, paper tape reader, card punch and tape drives. Those were the days before we had disk and large stores. I went on from there to work for a number of large, South African corporates, like ICL, Q Data, Persetel, Management Computer Services, GBS Wand and what became later SDD in those days was called MIPD.

During my career, I was able to travel into Africa to open new doors. I appointed the dealerships in 8 to 10 African countries and represented companies like Fujitsu, Epson and those environments. I moved down to Cape Town years ago and joined the Account Management Fraternity, where I have sold enterprise systems management tools, development tools, electronic funds transfer tools, electronic commerce tools and middleware to large Cape Town corporate like Sanlam, Engen, Old Mutual and the likes.

I have been very fortunate to have had a long career in IT which comes in very handy today, when talking to my clients because I am able to deal with people at a senior level. Also, people who come in to talk us and apply for positions feel comfortable talking to me. They always tell me that it is nice to talk to someone who has been in IT for a long time and understands the environment, understands the tools, the challenges and, obviously, what the clients want as well.

I have also been asked a number of times to advise people on careers; what they should be studying, what are the upcoming and latest and greatest languages, tools, developing environments, databases, etc.

So if you feel like talking about IT or would like to find out where your career should be going, especially what is new on the market today and what you could be aiming for and expecting to be paid, give me a call or drop me an email. I would like to hear from you.
