Red Dead Redemption Revives the Western Frontier

Rockstar has released another landmark game title with its gritty Western epic Red Dead Redemption

. Set in the twilight years of the American frontier, players take on the role of former outlaw John Marston as he fights for survival in the rapidly changing world to save his wife and daughter.

The vast playable world of Red Dead Redemption feels bigger and more detailed than any that's come before it, meaning players can really get absorbed into the Western experience. This goes beyond the high definition graphics to the detailed activities you can take part in on your mission; with everything from Texas Hold 'Em poker to duels, drunkenness and train robberies featuring in the game. If you ever thought anything was cool in a Western, you're sure to find it playing a part.

The game's influences in the Western genre are also evident for film fans, especially in its homage to the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone. This experience is boosted by the soundtrack from Jose Gonzalez and Friends of Dean Martinez, who capture the quintessential Western atmosphere without sounding clichd.

This naturalistic approach goes for all aspects of the game experience, which never feels forced in its portrayal of a world at the turn of the 20th century. The randomly generated mission and characters also serve to keep players on their toes, as the organic game world changes with each play. With gamers enjoying a unique experience each time, this never feels like you're watching a CGI film.

The realistic handling also means players are rewarded for actual skill and attention, rather than simple button bashing that has been a drawback of previous Rockstar titles such as Grand Theft Auto IV. You can even complete them in your own time, avoiding the time pressure and allowing some missions to take precedence when they spring up unexpectedly. Features such as the honour system also help your gaming experience evolve realistically, as Marston becomes better known for his exploits.

Anyone who loved the varied missions and depravity of the GTA series should find much to enjoy with Red Dead Redemption though, whether they were previously a fan of Westerns or not. Many games have tried to capture the Western atmosphere on disc, but never before has it been so well realised. Rockstar also seems to have finally nailed the multiplayer experience - allowing users to roam the environment with friends and team up to tackle missions together.
