Relationship Communication Tips - What To Talk About On Your First Date

So you took that big step and joined a dating site

. Or maybe your friend from work has a friend who has a great looking cousin you just HAVE to meet. And now youve set up a first date. One of the most crucial aspects of that first date is what you will talk about. Everybody can use a relationship communication tip or two. Dont worry. I have some great ideas about what to talk about on your first date and what not to talk about, too.

There are dos and the donts of first date conversation. Keep in mind that with todays style of dating, you often dont know much about each other before you meet for the first time. Break the ice and to try to make both your date and yourself comfortable enough to have a pleasant discussion. Its all about getting to know each other on the surface. Dont interrupt and do look directly at your date. Do NOT ogle the waiter or waitress or the cute person at the next table.

Dont monopolize the conversation. Make sure that you both have time to talk.

Do turn off your cell phone unless youre waiting for an emergency call and I mean a real emergency. DONT TEXT.

Do tell your date a little bit about your background and let your date respond. This is your chance to make a good impression and to learn about your date. DONT go on for hours about your early childhood traumas or how much you hate your mother.

Do tell your date a little bit about your job. Dont talk about how much you hate your lousy boss. If you just graduated from college, talk about college. Dont talk about drunken escapades or how many girls you nailed.

And while were on that subject: dont talk about sex. That may be what youre after but your date doesnt need to know that on a first date.

If you bring up a subject and your date has no interest in it, dont keep talking about it. Dont go on about football, for example, if your date shows signs of falling asleep.

Do try to find out something your date is interested in and talk about that.

Music is a good topic who doesnt like music? Other good topics include travel, pets, favorite foods, movies, hobbies, books, TV, brothers and sisters, etc. Remember, this is surface combination. Good travel talk does not include an hour long monologue on the time you got Montezumas revenge in Acapulco.

DONT even think about talking about politics, religion, finances, past relationships or dates, bodily functions (does your date need to know now about your irritable bowel syndrome?), the last time you were arrested, how you hate to pay child support, anything racist or sexist or anything else thats likely to start a debate or the Third World War.

Dont discuss love, marriage or how many children you want. These topics could scare the you-know-what out of your date!

On a first date, keep the conversation light, pleasant and fun and you will more than likely score a second date.
