Carpet can become boring - and dirty - as flooring

, and if you're looking to switch over to hardwood flooring in Denver, adding a domestic or exotic wood to your home is certainly affordable. But, different types of hardwoods exist - and not just the species used. Often, hardwoods are described as being "solid" or "engineered," and "laminate" is another option. If you're unsure about the differences and benefits of each, here's some information about these three different types of Denver hardwood flooring. Of course, some hardwoods may be better than others for your home, particularly if you have concrete or a radiant heat source directly below your floor.

Solid Denver hardwood describes flooring that is made with 100-percent wood - and one wood only. Usually cut from the center of a tree, solid hardwood flooring is fully one type of wood. Whether you're looking for a domestic species like white oak or hickory or an exotic one like Brazilian cherry, any wood listed as solid hardwood has no alteration. Although pre-finished solid hardwood is a possibility, the actual composition of the wood has not changed in any way, regardless of whether you can afford clear - the highest - or cabin grade - the lowest, also called "character" - flooring.

Some Denver hardwoods are referred to as "engineered." If you're imagining synthetic flooring along the lines of plywood, engineered hardwood flooring is actually made from 100-percent natural wood, only the composition includes two types. A piece of engineered hardwood includes the natural wood on top, with a piece about 5/16ths of an inch thick, and nine-ply birch on the bottom at 5/8ths of an inch. While still being all natural wood, the combination of birch on the bottom allows you to add hardwood flooring near a heat source without it warping or expanding. Solid hardwood, on the other hand, cannot be placed near a heat source.

Laminate is another term for hardwood flooring. Unlike solid and engineered hardwoods, however, laminate contains no natural wood. Instead, laminate flooring is made from high-density particle board with a photographic image of the wood on top. Sealing it on both sides is melamine or resin-cellulose. For realism, many types of Denver hardwood flooring add texture details and even a core designed to sound like authentic hardwood. If natural wood simply is not an option for your home, adding laminate will give your Denver hardwood floors the look of natural hardwood.
